With all the vast array of fertilisers on offer do I need a different one for every plant?
Suppliers of plant foods are continually bringing out new plant foods specifically formulated to individual plants. If you are specialising in one particular type of plant such as Box or Roses it is worth investing in the specifically formulated food. However, if you have a varied mix of plants in your garden, perhaps only one of each type of plant, then it does not seem wise to have lots of foods for every plant. You can use a good all round general purpose plant food such as Vitax Q4 Fertiliser. This is suited to trees, shrubs, roses, vegetables, fruit, hedging, bedding, hanging basket and perennials. There are some exceptions to this.
- Acid loving plants such as Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Blueberries, Pieris, Camellias, Magnolias, Heathers and Hydrangeas with blue flowers need to have an iron rich Ericaceous plant food
- If you are planting trees or shrubs the addition of Mycorrhizal Fungi to the planting hole directly in contact with the roots will assist the plants root development significantly
- Indoor Plants are an exception where the specifically formulated plant foods are required. Orchids, Palms and Bonsai, as examples, all have very different food requirements
