THE SPECTACULAR DROUGHT TOLERANT CENTURY PLANT – A TROPICAL DELIGHT Agave Century Plants
Originating in Mexico, Agave Century Plants are one of the most stunning statement plants in any tropical garden! This architectural beauty loves the sunshine but it can also cope with the worst of winters with a helping hand.
Agave Century Plants prefer full sun and a dry free draining soil. When you plant you should incorporate plenty of potting grit and even sand into the planting hole. Water when you plant. Then you are unlikely to need to water again. It is the ultimate “plant and forget” specimen for easy maintenance gardening. Be aware that the plant has very spiky tips and smaller spikes on the leaf edges meaning you may not want to plant it by a path that is often in use.
Agave Century Plants grow to a height of around 2m with a spread of around the same.
The flower spikes are truly breath-taking and can grow up to 8m in height. After this the plant will die. However, the plant will take up to 100 years to flower (normally closer to 30-40 years) and by this time it will have produces hundreds of offset baby plants that can be grown on to replace it.
Whilst the plants are hardy to -8oC whilst young plants will benefit from winter fleecing or being brought indoors. When larger the plant will withstand the winter months with no assistance.
This really is a stunning sculptural plant that requires little maintenance. Why not treat yourself and enjoy this tropical delight!
